AOA President Paul Miller says Australia's 2010 olive crop looks like coming in well under predictions.
It was expected that this year's crop would produce around 18 million litres, up from about 15 million last year. However, Paul says that now we are well through harvest in the major producing regions it seems that the national crop could actually be a little lower than last year.
Although olives were larger this year with a good growing season, there were less of them, making estimations difficult.
Paul says that tree growth in response to rain in most regions had been good meaning that we will see significant increases in coming years. Importantly, water supply is much less of an issue in most regions for now at least. Estimation is always difficult - as usual the best crop estimate is the actual data that comes from the processing plant after harvest.
